Salary Calculator Guide: CTC, Gross Salary & In-Hand Salary
Understanding your salary can be confusing when your compensation includes components such as basic salary, HRA, provident fund, gratuity and income tax.
This guide explains the difference between CTC, gross salary and in-hand salary, and shows how common salary components can affect your actual take-home pay.
You can also use our salary calculators to estimate your in-hand salary and calculate the effect of a salary hike.
1. What Is CTC?
CTC (Cost to Company) is the total annual cost an employer incurs for an employee. It may include salary components paid directly to the employee as well as employer contributions such as provident fund and gratuity.
Because some components of CTC are not paid as monthly cash salary, your annual CTC divided by 12 is not necessarily the same as your monthly in-hand salary.
2. What Is Gross Salary?
Gross salary is the salary amount before deductions such as employee provident fund and income tax. Depending on the employer’s salary structure, gross salary may include components such as basic salary, HRA and other allowances.
3. What Is In-Hand Salary?
In-hand salary, also called take-home salary, is the amount that you actually receive after applicable deductions from your salary.
Gross salary − applicable deductions = approximate take-home salary
4. CTC vs Gross Salary vs In-Hand Salary
| Salary term | What it generally means |
|---|---|
| CTC | Total annual cost to the employer |
| Gross Salary | Salary before employee deductions |
| In-Hand Salary | Amount received after applicable deductions |
These three amounts can be significantly different. Understanding the difference is important when comparing job offers or evaluating a salary increase.
5. How Does EPF Affect Take-Home Salary?
Employee EPF is deducted from salary and deposited into the employee’s provident fund account according to the applicable rules. Because it is a deduction from the employee’s salary, it can reduce the amount received as monthly cash.
6. What Is HRA?
HRA (House Rent Allowance) is a salary component provided by many employers to employees. Depending on the employee’s circumstances and the applicable tax rules, part of HRA may qualify for tax exemption under the old tax regime.
7. How Does a Salary Hike Affect Your Salary?
A salary hike increases your salary or CTC by a specified percentage, but the increase in your actual take-home pay may not be exactly the same percentage. Changes in EPF, income tax and other salary components can affect the final amount you receive.
